Divining the Living Waters: An Ecowomanist Imperative

EBONY NOELLE Golden, curator

The Divining: Ceremonies from in the name of the m/other tree is a series of activations, rituals and conversations devised to collectively source rituals, remedies and recipes for climate reparations and environmental justice through an intersectional framework guided by the following thematic imperatives: ceremony, culture, climate and creativity.

Divining is a work of intuition and strategy.  It is an approach to deep listening and returning to sites of rupture and sanctuary to learn from and with the land. It is praxis of deep study and surrender to what is learned andI have learned through this process we can divine climate futures rich with justice for the planet and all who live here. Each conversation, interview, road trip, prayer and meal, each band rehearsal and script draft, swim in the ocean is an attunement readying the road for what we can collectively conjure. Ultimately, divining is an act of faith and fortitude.

The Divining: Ceremonies from in the name of the m/other tree, is an element of Watering (W)hole, Jupiter Performance Studio’s engagement cosmology that activates cultural organizing strategies with local communities committed to climate reparations and ecowomanist visions for living in harmony with the planet. After JPS’ Harlem season, the studio will launch its inaugural tour which take Ebony and Associate Artists to New Orleans, Louisiana; Utica, Mississippi; Ashfield, MA; and Durham, NC in 2025.

Audiences are invited to travel throughout Harlem in this walking processional with the cast of The Divining: ceremonies from in the name of the m/other tree and members of our community. Featuring micro-rituals, poetry and percussion audiences will be guided to sacred sites throughout Harlem ending at The Apollo Stages at The Victoria.   Audiences are encouraged to wear white or blue.
